Living by the ocean is a choice that I appreciate every day, as every day means that I get to embrace the salt water. There's something missing from my day if I haven't seen the ocean or been in the ocean each day. The healing powers of the ocean have long been understood and it is no secret that seawater certainly improves health and wellbeing.

The natural high and feeling of euphoria that comes from being in the ocean is one that has been embraced by humans for thousands of years.

Since the recent COVID pandemic the ocean has been appreciated even more so in my local coastal town of Torquay, Vic. It is quite a magical scene at dawn along the Esplanade of Torquay, with the ocean being used by various groups of people, all embracing the benefits of the ocean.

As the temperature and ocean temperature starts to drop....the swimmers and plunges don't. (Just the time spent in the water does!)

It's not just the cold temperature of the water and increased movement of the body that will leave you invigorated after your ocean swim. Ocean water has specific properties because of its high levels of minerals. These include sodium (salt), calcium, chloride, potassium, sulphate and magnesium.

Seawater also can have a natural healing power on minor cuts, abrasions and can sometimes even improve some skin conditions.

If ocean swimming or plunging is something on your bucket list....it's never too late. My mum at 69yrs of age started with plunging 3 days a week and is now hooked. She is now a regular ocean swimmer 3-4 days a week and wonders why she didn't start earlier.

If you're looking for a new wetsuit or more information about wetsuits, I highly recommend chatting the team at 2xu
